Knowledge Conflict
A condition in which knowledge held internally by a model conflicts with context or external information supplied through a prompt or retrieval.
Example
Although a newly supplied procedure changes an eligibility condition, the model relies on older knowledge and gives the previous condition.
Distinctions and cautions
Knowledge Conflict is a disagreement between information sources, not the same as Retrieval Failure, where necessary information cannot be obtained. Which source should take precedence depends on the task and intended use; no single priority rule is necessarily correct in all settings.
Open questions and cautions
It has not been established whether an appropriate order of precedence when knowledge conflicts arise can be determined uniformly, independent of the task.
